Helpful Tips to Follow After an Auto Accident
Please make note of the following tips shared by Forrest Collision that will help you make calm and collected decisions.
Step 1: Keep Calm
You've just met with an accident.
The first thing you should do is stay where you are and don't leave the scene. Ensure all the occupants of the car are alright and contact an ambulance if necessary. If the accident has taken place in an uninhabited area, set off flares if you have them.
Step 2: Exchange Documents
Now isn't the time to play the blame game. Exchange the required documents like license, registration, and the motor vehicle identification card between yourself and the other driver.
Step 3: Share Your Details
Make sure to share nothing other than your name, address, license number, car's license plate number, name of the car's registered owner, and your insurance company.
Step 4: Get Details
Make a note of the other driver's name, address, car's license number, date of birth, sex, state of license and the phone number.
Step 5: Ownership Details
Given that it's possible that the driver of the other car involved in the accident may not be its owner, you should find out the owner's details like the name, address and insurance company.
Step 6: Injured Parties
Inquire with the local police about the people injured in the accident. Note their names, addresses, date of birth, sex and the extent of injury.
Step 7: Witnesses
Find out who witnessed the accident and take down their contact details.
Step 8: Damage Caused
Make note of the make, body type, year, license number and extent of damage of the other vehicle.
Step 9: Draw a Diagram
Record the date, time, and location of the accident.
Step 10: Report the Accident
If someone has been severely injured or even died in the accident, don't waste time reporting it to the police. Request a copy of their report within 24 hours. Also, inform your insurance agent immediately.
